My creative research and scholarship are grounded in embodied, theatrical, interactive, and cinematic storytelling techniques. I investigate and experiment with how these techniques partner with digital media and new technologies to create narratives in live, physical/digital environments. My research centers on how new artistic experiences, forms, stories, and platforms are created and manipulated - in both low-tech and high-tech methods - by artists, performers, technicians, users, and audiences. I am deeply interested in how humans interact with technology, and I center technology, digital theories, and interdisciplinary techniques into the very meaning making of the work being created. The outcome of my research is to engage the imaginations and hearts of a twenty-first century audience by concentrating on storytelling through technology rather than dwelling solely on technology itself.

During my time at Iowa, my research has been awarded $221,579.00 in funding ($196,579.00 internal and $25,000 external) and includes an international premiere at the prestigious 2019 Prague Quadrennial. My scholarly research includes a published book, Digital Media, Projection Design and Technology for Theatre (Routledge, 2018) for which I am the co-author. My creative research over the last five years can be divided into four major categories: 1.) Co-Principal Investigator, Co-Creator, Producer, Director, and Designer of ongoing multi-year, large national and international research projects; 2.) Co-Creator/Creative Artist where I serve as the principal digital media/system designer for which I collaborate on the inception, development, and public performance of the artistic work; 3.) Traditional digital media designer where I am hired to collaborate on another artist’s or company’s project; and 4.) Writer and presenter.
