By sharing my passion and experience with the next generation of digital media creators, I arm them with the skills and artistry they need to succeed in the industry. I teach the practical hardware and software skills and the subtler aspects of aesthetics in performance, art and design. I impart to students that it is our main job as media makers to use technology to develop connections between people by focusing on storytelling through technology and not just to focus on the technology itself. My teaching grounds students in the theory and production fundamentals of digital video, new media, interactive media, digital art, and live performance, and inspires them to explore new ways to express their ideas and creativity through emerging technologies.
To date, I have received multi-year, Student Technology Fee (STF) grants totaling $1,028,959.61 to purchase equipment for student use in courses, facilities upgrades and for student worker salaries.
Before joining the faculty in 2016, my position did not exist at the University of Iowa and there was not a curriculum in digital media in performance, including the five courses that I created and currently teach. These five courses form the foundation in the practical technical skills of working with a wide-range of professional digital media hardware and software, while also providing aesthetic explorations and the artistic and storytelling techniques for incorporating digital media into live performance.
